The Windwood Music Festival comes to Banff to present Like Clockwork: a steampunk-themed classical chamber music concert. The program takes us deep into the gears of clockwork through the voices of Shostakovich, Ravel, and Schumann. Our journey through this world of rhythmic intricacy and precision begins with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.1, with its persistent and delicate clockwork. From there it’s off to Ravel’s timeless string quartet, alternating between suspended floating and the cutting edges of metal. Then it’s back to Shostakovich with his tumultuous Concertino for two pianos, ending with Schumann’s piano quintet, resembling the grandest of grandfather clocks with it’s bell-like peals.
