Creep, Cryptograms, and Kapustin
Time to get in gear for Festival III: Steampunk Edition
With this high-octane opening concert featuring the entire Windwood Music Festival.
We'll start our journey with Shostakovich's piano quintet, where the prolific composer spells out the initials of his own name in a musical cryptogram.
Once that puzzle has been set, we'll jump to the future with Jessie Montgomery, Duke Ellington, and Radiohead.
We end with the wildly charismatic Kapustin concerto for violin and piano featuring Windwood founders, Duo Perdendosi, as well as Claude Lapalme, the conductor of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. This showstopper will also feature a string chamber orchestra of Windwood and Red Deer Symphony musicians. Come dressed in your steampunk best!

Like Clockwork - St. George in the Pines, Banff
The Windwood Music Festival comes to Banff to present Like Clockwork: a steampunk-themed classical chamber music concert. The program takes us deep into the gears of clockwork through the voices of Shostakovich, Ravel, and Schumann. Our journey through this world of rhythmic intricacy and precision begins with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.1, with its persistent and delicate clockwork. From there it’s off to Ravel’s timeless string quartet, alternating between suspended floating and the cutting edges of metal. Then it’s back to Shostakovich with his tumultuous Concertino for two pianos, ending with Schumann’s piano quintet, resembling the grandest of grandfather clocks with it’s bell-like peals. Join the musicians of the Windwood Music Festival in this musical steampunk journey, Like Clockwork.

A Final Fair-Well
Ever heard classical strings and piano rock out? After two weeks of inspiring creativity and celebrating community, Duo Perdendosi and the resident artists come together for an eclectic chamber music concert. Experience the monumental Brahms Piano Quintet as well as American-Indian composer Reena Esmail’s luminous Piano Trio, African-American composer William Grant Still’s “Summerland”, and a final hurrah with an all-time classic: “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Come celebrate the classics in every sense of the word!
Musical Carousel
Do you have a hard time answering the question “what kind of music do you like,” because you like so many different kinds of music that you can’t possibly choose? Well then this concert is for you! Come see all 8 WMF musicians while they perform pop hits arranged for piano and strings outdoors at Chinook Park. Following a wild collage of tunes from Russian Traditional songs, Irish fiddling, French cabaret, and good ol’ Western rodeo, the Windwood Festival musicians will invite local students and artists to join them in performing Boccherini’s String Quartet and Coldplay’s Viva la Vida! A true community collaboration, the concert will conclude with a festive performance with the musicians of the Calgary Civic Low-Brass Quartet.
Resident Project “Musical Bingo”
Titus Young:
I plan to present a solo cello concert where I can perform some of my favorite pieces for solo cello. Alongside the music, I want to have the audience participate in a game of musical bingo. I would provide bingo cards with various musical items. At the beginning of the program I could give a brief explanation of the more technical terms and then begin to play. As I play, they would mark on their bingo cards things they hear, for example pizzicato, bariolage, or a repeat. This way the audience could remain not only engaged with the music, but also attentive to details they might not normally notice.
Resident Project “Funky Frisky Folky Tunes”
Audience: Young adults to middle-aged people wanting a fun and chill night out while also participating/contributing to the community.
Resident Project “Musical Thoughts”
I would like to present a program where the audience and passersby can listen to the music, feel whatever comes to mind while listening, and share their thoughts or write it down on notes to put in a box to be read aloud anonymously afterward.
Renaissance Fair
Hark! Do mine ears deceive me? They do not! You have heard correctly! The Windwood Music Festival is proud to present a Renaissance Faire at the Jensen Park Gazebo! Come hear the distinguished WMF String Quartet perform masterworks by Florence Price and Felix Mendelssohn, along with some merry tunes from times of old. Visit the illustrious vendors of the Airdrie Farmers Market, watch the fantastical feats of aerial dancers from R.Song Studios, and participate in theatrical festivities! Dress for the times or come as thou art!
Featuring collaboration with the Nosecreek Players on their play, “When the Sun Loved the Moon”!
Resident Project “Vignettes from Vienna”
The theme of this program of short works for solo piano and string-piano duo is celebrating the positive aspects of life in these difficult times. Related subjects are the desire for exploration and learning new experiences. Music is a powerful healing force that can transform lives, encourage unity, and inspire love and understanding.
Opening Concert “A Windwood Fairy Tale”
Performing as Duo Perdendosi, violinist Maitreyi Muralidharan and pianist Tong Wang raise the curtain on the 2023 Windwood Festival with a new, thrilling musical storytelling concert. The Duo will take you along an original fairy tale from the enchanted forests of the Czech Republic and the mystical Yangzi River of the East China Sea through to bewildering drama inside “Howl’s Moving Castle”. Finally, with your help to sound the fairy godmother’s magical triangle, we come back and around again, home to Windwood, where Fauré’s luscious Violin Sonata sweeps the fantastical memories into the breeze of the open air.
Featuring works by Beethoven, Janáček, Wong, Wijeratne, Kats-Chernin, Hisaishi, Chu, and Fauré.
Food & Chamber Music Funfair
6 international resident artists take over the stage for a special chamber music concert. Don’t miss this special opportunity: come hear tango, jazz, classics, modern, and old-time favourites alike in one concert experience! Arrive early at 12pm to enjoy a festive community potluck and family-friendly events before the musical showcase!

Masquerade
The party of the year. Put on your most extravagant gown and tux, grab a mask, and find yourself swirling from Viennese Waltzes and Russian Ballets to jazz standards and French chansons. All 8 WMF musicians will be mingling amongst you before they perform. You never know who’s that next dance partner behind the mask…!
This event is hosted in collaboration with the stunning, unique venue Brella Vida in celebration of their grand opening! Drinks and hor d’eouvres will be served. A special VIP occasion to meet and greet the artists afterwards.
